Guidelines to safely make homemade cosmetics:
Please read these strong recommendations before attempting to make your own cosmetics:
- Some ingredients may cause allergic reactions or skin irritation, so it is important to perform a preliminary test by applying the preparation to a small area of skin (about 1cm) in the crook of your elbow at least 48 hours before using the product.
- Cosmetics containing a water phase are prone to bacterial contamination, so it is crucial to prepare your homemade cosmetics in a hygienic environment. Below are some best practices to follow when making your own cosmetics:
- Sanitise all utensils and containers before use. You can do this by either boiling them in water for 10 minutes (excluding plastic containers and pumps) and drying them thoroughly, or by rinsing them with pharmacy alcohol (excluding certain containers) and air-drying them.
- Wash your hands and wear clean gloves before getting started.
- Avoid touching the ingredients and preparation with your bare hands.
- Store temperature-sensitive finish products in cool conditions and use them promptly.
- Use New Directions Australia preservatives accordingly, keeping in mind to choose the correct preservative and follow the recommended dosage.
- Immediately discard any preparation that shows signs of mould, unpleasant odour or changes in appearance.
- Some raw materials may require high temperatures, so take precautions to avoid burns and spitting. Eye protection is advisable.
- Label and date your preparations carefully and keep them out of reach of children.
- Follow indicated doses and keep a traceability book with the composition and batches of ingredients used, as well as the manufacturing date. Please note that the homemade cosmetic recipes provided on our website and documents are examples only, and we deny any liability in relation to them.
